iPhone Duo Battery Life: How Long Does Apple's Foldable iPhone Last?

Battery life is one of the biggest questions around any foldable phone. The larger screen gives you more room to work, watch videos and play games, but it can also consume more power.

Apple has taken a different approach with the iPhone Duo. Instead of using one conventional battery, the phone has two built-in batteries, with one battery on each side of the foldable device.

Apple says the iPhone Duo can provide up to 24 hours of typical use on a single charge. Video playback reaches up to 44 hours when using the smaller outer display and up to 31 hours when using the larger inner display.

Here's what you need to know about the iPhone Duo battery.

How long does the iPhone Duo battery last?

Apple gives three main battery-life figures for the Duo:

Battery test

Battery life

Typical use

Up to 24 hours

Video playback — outer display

Up to 44 hours

Video playback — inner display

Up to 31 hours

Streamed video — outer display

Up to 37 hours

Streamed video — inner display

Up to 26 hours

The 24-hour figure is the number to pay the most attention to for everyday use.

Apple's typical-use measurement assumes a mixture of activities rather than continuously watching video on one screen. That includes things such as messaging, browsing, photography, music, streaming, gaming and navigation.

So while the headline number reaches 44 hours, you shouldn't expect the Duo to run for 44 hours during normal mixed usage.

iPhone Duo battery life with the outer display

When the phone is folded, you use the 5.4-inch outer display.

This is where the Duo delivers its best video playback figure: up to 44 hours.

Streaming video is rated at up to 37 hours with the outer display.

The smaller screen naturally puts less demand on the battery than the large folding display.

This makes the outer screen useful when you don't need the larger display. Checking messages, browsing, making calls or quickly using an app can all be done without opening the phone.

If battery life is your priority, keeping the Duo folded for lighter tasks should help you get more time from a charge.

iPhone Duo battery life with the inner display

Open the phone and the experience changes.

The Duo gives you a 7.6-inch folding display, but the larger screen also consumes more power.

Apple rates the Duo for:

  • Up to 31 hours of video playback

  • Up to 26 hours of streamed video

when using the inner display.

That's a significant difference from the outer display.

The gap is especially noticeable when watching video continuously. Apple rates the outer display for 44 hours compared with 31 hours on the inner screen.

For people who spend a lot of time gaming, watching videos or using demanding apps on the large display, battery consumption will therefore be higher.

Why does the iPhone Duo have two batteries?

The foldable design creates a problem that conventional phones don't have.

There's a hinge running through the middle of the device, and the internal components have to fit into two separate halves.

Apple's solution is an iPhone-first dual-battery architecture, with one high-energy battery on each side of the phone.

Apple says the two batteries work together as a single system through its silicon and energy-rebalancing algorithms.

This allows Apple to use the available internal space more efficiently rather than trying to fit one large battery into the phone.

The eSIM-only design also saves internal space that can be used for battery capacity. Apple's C2 modem and A20 Pro chip are designed with power efficiency in mind as well.

Does the iPhone Duo have good battery life?

On paper, yes.

The 24-hour typical-use rating puts the Duo in the range you'd expect from a high-end iPhone.

The more interesting part is how much the screen you use affects battery life.

With the outer display, Apple claims up to 44 hours of video playback. With the larger inner display, that drops to 31 hours.

That's not necessarily a weakness. The inner screen is much larger and designed for a different type of use.

If you're reading, multitasking or watching something on the big screen, you're trading some battery life for the larger viewing area.

iPhone Duo battery vs regular iPhone

Comparing battery life based only on Apple's video-playback numbers can be misleading because the Duo has two different screens.

The 24-hour typical-use figure is more useful when thinking about everyday use.

Apple says that figure is based on using both displays equally.

That means someone who spends most of their day on the outer screen may see different results from someone who keeps the phone open and spends hours using the 7.6-inch display.

The Duo is therefore unusual among iPhones: how you physically use the phone has a direct effect on its battery consumption.

How fast does the iPhone Duo charge?

The iPhone Duo supports fast wired charging.

With a 60W-capable adapter or higher, Apple says the phone can reach 50% charge in around 20 minutes when connected through USB-C.

There is also a MagSafe option.

Using a 35W adapter or higher with the MagSafe Charger, the Duo can reach 50% in around 30 minutes.

The phone also supports wireless charging through MagSafe and Qi2.

MagSafe + 35W adapter or higher

Around 30 minutes

One thing to remember: the required high-power charging adapter is available separately. Apple's specifications specifically state that the 60W-capable adapter is not included with the phone.

Does the iPhone Duo come with a charger?

No.

As with Apple's recent iPhone models, the Duo does not include a power adapter in the box.

You'll need a compatible USB-C power adapter if you want to take advantage of the fastest wired charging.

For the approximately 20-minute 50% charge figure, Apple specifies a 60W-capable adapter or higher.

How does the dual-battery system work?

The two batteries aren't treated as two separate batteries that you have to manage yourself.

iOS manages them as one power system.

Apple says its silicon and energy-rebalancing algorithms allow the two batteries to operate together, while the physical arrangement lets Apple make better use of the space available on both sides of the foldable phone.

For users, this means there's no second battery percentage to worry about.

You simply see the normal iPhone battery indicator.

What affects iPhone Duo battery life?

Your actual battery life will depend heavily on how you use the phone.

Some of the biggest factors include:

Screen usage

The large 7.6-inch display will generally consume more power than the smaller outer display, especially during continuous video playback.

Gaming

Games can put more load on the A20 Pro chip, GPU and display, so battery drain can be considerably faster than with lighter tasks.

Camera use

Recording high-resolution video and taking photos can also increase power consumption, particularly during long shooting sessions.

Cellular connectivity

5G usage can affect battery life depending on signal strength and network conditions.

Streaming

Streaming video uses both the display and wireless connection continuously, which is why Apple's streamed-video figure is lower than its offline video-playback figure.

Is 24 hours of battery life enough?

For most users, the answer should be yes if their usage is spread throughout the day.

Apple's up to 24-hour typical-use rating is designed to represent a mixture of everyday activities rather than one continuous task.

Heavy users who spend several hours gaming, recording video or watching content on the 7.6-inch screen may need to recharge sooner.

That's where the fast-charging capability becomes useful.

A roughly 20-minute wired charge can take the battery to 50%, according to Apple's testing.

So even if you use the large display heavily, a short charging session can add a significant amount of battery back.

iPhone Duo battery life: The bottom line

The iPhone Duo's battery story is more interesting than simply asking how many hours it lasts.

Apple has built the phone around a dual-battery system to make better use of the space inside a foldable device.

The headline numbers are:

  • Up to 24 hours of typical use

  • Up to 44 hours of video playback with the outer display

  • Up to 31 hours of video playback with the inner display

  • Up to 37 hours of streamed video with the outer display

  • Up to 26 hours of streamed video with the inner display

  • 50% charge in around 20 minutes with a 60W-capable wired charger

  • 50% charge in around 30 minutes with MagSafe and a 35W adapter or higher

The biggest thing to keep in mind is the difference between the two screens. The 5.4-inch outer display gives you the best battery figures, while the 7.6-inch inner display uses more power in exchange for a much larger viewing area.

For everyday use, Apple's 24-hour typical-use rating is the figure that matters most. And with fast charging available, the Duo shouldn't need to spend much time connected to a charger when you do run low.
